More about “Resonating Shells” in the Artist Statement:

In Resonating Shells (Triptych) (2023), I draw from my childhood experience of visiting my Ukrainian immigrant grandmother in Miami Beach every summer. A survivor of the Holodomor genocide, she told me stories of her youth while we spent hours every day walking in the warm sun, collecting seashells. I still have all the shells; there are thousands.

Shells are the chosen subject of the triptych, capturing the essence of these ocean treasures as it relates to my precious acquaintance with them. I am mesmerized by the variations in the shells. I abstractly record each shell’s uniqueness in shape, patterns as well as geometric intricacies and fluid lines.

Shells often look monochromatic from afar; upon close scrutiny there is a vast spectrum of colors. I explore the relationship of color to create kaleidoscopic results: juxtaposing warm and cool, saturated and muted, high contrast and low contrast colors. Similar to most of my other artwork, the repetition of shapes and working within a grid structure simultaneously depicts order and fragmentation. The rigid arrangement of horizontal and vertical stripes in each square creates a woven, vibrational energy.

Shells carry symbolism for every culture. For me they represent the interconnectedness of all living things.
