100 Artists. One Gallery. Founded by the Monmouth County Arts Council in 1979, the Annual Juried Art Exhibition has been a core part of the Monmouth Museum for more than forty years. Since the Museum took full sponsorship in 2011, the exhibition has expanded significantly, drawing regional, national, and international submissions. Artists from Japan, Russia, Lithuania, Israel, and Germany have participated in what has become one of the Museum’s most diverse and anticipated showcases of contemporary art. Now entering its 46th year, the exhibition brings together 100 artists for an inspiring and diverse range of contemporary art from across the region, the nation, and the world.

I am honored my painting “Indivisible” was selected to be in this show. Here is my statement about this piece:
“INDIVISIBLE” explores the layered relationship between my Ukrainian-American experience and our collective national history, highlighting an intricate tapestry. At the macro level, the USA flag’s official unmistakable attributes are preserved: the familiar 50 stars, 13 stripes and strong red, white and blue base hues feel like home. Viewed closely, the canvas features a spectrum of colors, mirroring the uniqueness of people and diverse cultures in this country, past, present and future. Inside the very recognizable original flag design, stripes are nested within stripes through a patchwork-like concept creating a vibrational energy. A rhythmic interplay of repeated patterns within the grid structure simultaneously evoke cognitive dissonance: fragmentation and unity. This juxtaposition of coexisting components (“parts” versus “whole”) represents both independence and interdependence, the dynamic elements that shape the evolving fabric of daily life. “Indivisible” delves into three questions:
What would a reimagined US flag look like, reflecting this moment in time, while preserving its original patriotic design?
How can inclusivity, loving values, diverse heritage and ancestral roots be represented in the fabric of the flag without revising history or provoking division?
Can a transformed version of a nearly 250-year-old flag depict our nation’s growth and be appreciated alongside the original?
