Controlled Chaos
About the Art: Controlled Chaos
-
I explore the relationship of color and the repetition of shapes within a grid structure. Each square has been carefully divided into three equal rectangles. The deliberate arrangement of these pieces fitted closely together has a tiling effect to add comfort and stability on a small scale. When woven all together, the larger picture creates a vibrational energy and builds on the theme of controlled chaos. The directional aspect of the color blocks in combination with repeated color choices is intended to create the effect of constricted movement and has kaleidoscopic results.
A great source of inspiration for me is how women for centuries, all over the world, have utilized “domestic” arts and textiles to communicate their stories and spark change from their dwellings. Growing up with Ukrainian grandmothers, I was surrounded by, and now really appreciate, the intricacies and patterns of traditional embroidery, crocheted and knitted items, as well as tapestries and quilts. I strive to incorporate elements of these practices and items found at home into my paintings. The geometric patterns, construction and functional qualities of quilt design especially appeals to me. The idea of enveloping oneself in a blanket for warmth and protection, resonates with me even more. I hope my art can serve as an emotional blanket for others as it has for me during the global pandemic.
I believe incorporating elements of “domestic” arts into my own work will help shine a spotlight on creations in the “feminine” realm. I strive to elevate the work of and honor women from the past, present and future. I feel grateful and excited to be part of this movement.
