This illustration of pysanky is inspired by the Ukrainian tradition of decorating Easter eggs usually featuring intricate designs which are often geometric, floral and include animals like birds and deer. The word pysanky is derived from the Ukrainian word “pysaty”, which means “to write”, as in, writing on eggs. The designs are symbolic; some themes include rebirth, prosperity, strength, fertility.
Although usually associated with Easter, decorating pysanky actually predates Christianity. It is a way we can all show our support for Ukraine, Ukrainian culture and independence as the invasion threatens these things.
